Infectious mononucleosis is a viral illness caused in 90% of the cases by Epstein-Barr virus. It generally affects children & young adults. Symptoms include fever, sore throat, headache, enlarged lymph glands & fatigue. The virus spreads through saliva as seen during kissing, sharing drinks, food & tooth brushes with infected people. Patient usually develops antibodies 3 weeks after infection but some patients take as long as 3 months to develop antibodies. Mono test detects the antibodies against the virus.
