JAK2 gene gives instructions to form a protein which promotes cell growth in your body. Mutation of this gene is acquired & often seen specially in aging population. The most common mutation seen is JAK2-V617F which promotes development of a condition called Myeloproliferative Neoplasm (MPN). MPN includes Polycythemia vera with 100% patients showing JAK2 mutation, Essential thrombocytosis and primary Myelofibrosis each with 50% patients showing JAK2 mutation. The V617F mutation acts on all the cells in the bone marrow leading to their growth. JAK2 Exon 12 mutation is specially seen in patients suffering from Polycythemia vera or Idiopathic erythrocytosis. This test checks for both types of mutations in JAK2 namely V617F & Exon 12.
