Inhibin B is a hormone secreted by the special cells in the ovary called granulosa cells & in the testes called sertoli cells. Inhibin B levels rise in the early part of the first phase of normal menstrual cycle. It is a biomarker for cancer arising from granulosa cells in the ovary and is present in more than 85% patients with granulosa cell tumors. It is also raised in 60% patients suffering from mucinous epithelial tumors of the ovary.The levels fall after the tumor is removed. This test is used for screening patients suffering from ovarian cancer and also used to monitor the spread & recurrence of disease. Inhibin B also plays a role in infertility.
